4-Patch Hanging Valentine Heart – Step 1
Start by arranging the four squares how you want them to look.
4-Patch Hanging Valentine Heart – Step 2
Then place the top two pretty sides together and pin down the side. Do the same to the bottom two squares. Sew down the seams using the pressure foot as your guide.
4-Patch Hanging Valentine Heart – Step 3
Press the seams flat to one side. For quilting and crafts pressing the seams to one side usually means pressing the seams to the darker fabric.
4-Patch Hanging Valentine Heart – Step 4
Next place the top and bottom pretty sides together matching the seams at the center. Pin in place. Sew down the seam once again using the pressure foot as your guide.
4-Patch Hanging Valentine Heart – Step 5
Now you have a 4-patch square. Press the seams again.
4-Patch Hanging Valentine Heart – Step 6
Place the square diagonally and pin the heart pattern trying to make sure that you have equal parts of all four prints within the heart pattern. You can make your own heart pattern or use our free heart pattern. After that cut out the heart.
4-Patch Hanging Valentine Heart – Step 7
Next pin a piece of ribbon for your handle as shown in the photo above. If you are using these hearts as bowl fillers do not add the ribbon as a hanger.
4-Patch Hanging Valentine Heart – Step 8
Using the four patch heart as a pattern cut out another heart for the back. Pin the two heart pieces pretty side together making sure that the ribbon is inside the heart. Leave a 3″ opening on one side of the heart. You will not sew there. That will be your opening for turning and stuffing. Sew around the heart once again using the pressure foot as your guide. Remember not to sew at the opening. Trim seams if necessary.
4-Patch Hanging Valentine Heart – Step 9
Finally turn heart pretty side out. Gently poke out the point with a stick or pencil. Stuff the heart. Hand sew the opening closed.
Your 4-patch heart is now finished and ready to be hung up or make several and place them in a bowl for a lovely Valentine decoration for your home!
