5 Reasons to Use Painters Cloth for Your Next Craft Project

Sharing is caring!

As a seasoned crafter and Etsy seller, I have tried many different types of fabrics over the years. But my all-time favorite fabric to use when crafting is canvas painters cloth. This affordable and versatile fabric has a nice texture and color that makes it perfect for a wide range of projects, from farmhouse decor, French country, nautical or beach and even to rustic cabin styles.

I always wash the painters drop cloth first with a little bit of bleach just to brighten it up some and soften it up a little bit. Some of the crafts I have made with the painters cloth is fabric wall art, throw pillows, table runner, candle mats, quilts, doilies, curtains, tote bags, patchwork patches, flag banners, bucket hats, and much more. I even made a custom for an actor playing Jesus in the musical “Jesus Christ Super Star.”

Did I mention it makes a great fabric to paint onto!

Here are just a few of the reasons why I love using painters cloth as a craft fabric:

  • Texture: The texture of canvas painters cloth gives it a unique and interesting feel that is different from other fabrics like cotton or polyester. It has a nice weight and drape that makes it perfect for projects like throw pillows, table runners, and curtains.
  • Color: The creamy beige/gray color of painters cloth is a great neutral that goes well with a variety of decor styles. It is easy to dye or paint, making it easy to customize to your project’s specific needs.
  • Versatility: Painters cloth is a great all-purpose fabric that can be used for a wide range of crafting projects. I have used it to make everything from tote bags and quilts to wall art and candle mats. It is especially great for rustic or primitive style projects that look good with raw edges or frayed seams.
  • Affordability: Painters cloth is an affordable alternative to more expensive fabrics like linen or silk. It can be purchased in bulk or by the yard, making it a great option for large or small projects. My favorite way to purchase it is though Amazon, quick and easy and I get it the next day!
  • Easy to work with: Painters cloth is easy to cut, sew, and embellish. It doesn’t stretch or shift like some other fabrics, making it easy to work with even for beginners.
