A Touch of Cottage Style Decorating for Valentine’s Day

Sharing is caring!

Today, I’m excited to share with you simple and easy ways to add some farmhouse cottage style charm to your Valentine’s day decorating. Sometimes when the excitement from all the lights, glitter, and trees have been packed up in boxes and stored back up of the attic again for another year, the house looks empty and gloomy. I know a lot of us don’t decorate that much for the smaller holidays, but my mom always made each and every holiday special, even President’s Day.  She would add little touches in her decorating and bake special desserts reflecting each holiday theme. These were wonderful childhood memories and even into my teenage years. I did the same thing for my children when they were growing up. A few little changes and touches of pink and red here and there can really make a home so much more happy and cozy and loving during Valentine’s day.

One of the things I love about decorating for Valentine’s Day is that most decorations can go with any themed home/room; Cottage style, Farmhouse, French country, Shabby Chic, Modern, Romantic Victorian, Boho. You can really mix and match for this holiday and it all looks cozy, soft, and inviting.

No matter what holiday I am decorating for I always begin with my fireplace mantel. That is the focal point as you enter my home, so I am most excited to decorate that area first.

I love to combine my kids handmade crafts they made as young children in school along with my handmade crafts, and cute little hearts, cherubs, and Valentine goodies I have found and collected throughout the past years.

Table runners and candle mats add softness and become a beautiful foundation for whatever center piece you choose. Above is an easy to sew heart applique candle mat. Here you can find step-by-step directions for a DIY Country Heart Applique Quilted Candle Mat. My centerpiece is pretty pink real-looking faux roses and eucalyptus stems placed in a cream colored metal vase I bought off Amazon.

On the chair I placed a charming little LOVE pillow. This was super easy to sew and if you don’t love to sew like I do, you could also use glue to put this together. I simply cute out 2 rectangles out of old vintage pink calico fabric that had tiny beige colored motifs on it, and then sewed a zig-zag stitch over top of thick earth-toned beige yarn the word LOVE onto ONE of my pieces of fabric. Then I placed the fabrics pretty sides together and sewed around the pillow leaving a 4″ opening on one side. Turn your pillow pretty side out, stuff, and hand sew it closed, super easy!

Here is a simple 4-patch heart pillow you can make. This is such a quick and easy project and you can hand sew it or machine sew it. I tea-stained my fabrics first to give it that warm rustic country farmhouse look. You can make several of these and place them in a basket along with some faux greenery for a nice welcoming view for your family and guests. This farmhouse pillow with the pink heart in the center was from the DIY Mommy. I Love this! I can’t wait to make it.
