MAKING THE VINTAGE LOOKING PATCHWORK VALENTINE HEART:

I wanted to tone down my fabrics and make them look more vintage and old, so I tea-stained my fabrics first. You can use Rite Dye, or you can use good old-fashioned tea and/or coffee to accomplish that look. Doing so,  gives your fabrics a more worn-out look and a more rustic old cottage style primitive heart pillow.

Start off by arranging the four squares how you would like them to look. Make sure if you have fabrics with patterns or words on it that they are all facing the same way.

Place the top two pretty sides together and pin down the side. Sew a straight line down the one side. Do the same thing to the other 2 fabric pieces.

Press the seams flat to one side. For quilting and crafts pressing the seams to one side usually means pressing the seams to the darker fabric.

Next place the top and bottom pretty sides together matching the seams at the center. Pin in place.

Sew down the seam once again using the pressure foot as your guide.

Now you have a 4-patch square. Press the seams again.

Place the square diagonally and pin the heart pattern trying to make sure that you have equal parts of all four fabrics within the heart pattern.
Cut it out.

Using the four patch heart as a pattern, cut out another heart for the back of your heart pillow.

Pin the two heart pieces pretty side together.

Leave a 3″ opening on one side of the heart. You will not sew there. That will be your opening for turning and stuffing.

Sew around the heart using the pressure foot as your guide. Remember not to sew at the opening.

Trim seams if necessary.

Turn heart pretty side out. Gently poke out the point with a stick or pencil. Stuff the heart. Hand sew the opening closed. Last, hand sew a button in the center going through all layers and stuffing to the back side of the heart.
