Pot holders, Hot Pads, and Trivets are fun projects because not only do they knit up quickly, but it’s also one of the first projects you can design yourself. For this project, the only rules are to use yarn thick enough to protect your hands or your table from a hot dish, and to keep the shape in a square or rectangle. This is a great project to practice your color changing skills on too. Both the pot holders and the trivets are worked in seed stitch. It’s the perfect stitch because it’s thicker than other stitches.

KNIT YOUR OWN PERSONAL POT HOLDER! HERE IS WHAT WE USED TO MAKE OURS:
- 1 pair of size 10 knitting needles
- 1 skien chunky weight yarn, preferably a cotton blend (more protective and washes well)

Start by casting on 20 stitches.
Knitted Pot Holders, Hot Pads, and Trivets – Step 2
Row 1: *K1,P1* Continue in pattern till end of row
Row 2: *P1, K1* Continue in pattern till end of row
Repeat rows 1 and 2
Once the project is long enough so all four sides are even, bind off, trim ends, and tuck in yarn end.
Knitted Pot Holders, Hot Pads, and Trivets – Step 3
Note for the trivets: Follow same directions as for coasters, except for this project you can make smaller square-shaped trivets or longer rectangular. It’s nice to have a mix of both for different sized dishes.
An Idea… Make a set of two potholders or trivets and place them together with pretty ribbon tied in a bow to give as a house warming gift along with a casserole dish. Everyone loves handmade gifts because they are made from the heart.
I hope you enjoy whatever you decided to make whether it was a Knitted Pot Holder, Hot Pad, or Trivet.
