Today I’m sharing how I made these simple and rustic burlap hearts. I love hanging the hearts throughout my home for Valentines Day. They especially looked pretty hanging from a window with the earthy palette the burlap brings. I also made some without the jute rope hanger and placed them in an old wooden bowl as fillers. They are quick and inexpensive to make.
If you don’t know how to sew, you can always just use hot glue for this project following the same instructions below. Sewing the heart will look much better, but gluing is fine too!

Rustic Burlap Valentine Heart – Step 1
Start by cutting out 2 of the larger hearts from burlap fabric and 2 of the smaller hearts from red felt fabric. You can make your own heart pattern or use our free Burlap Heart Pattern!
Rustic Burlap Valentine Heart – Step 2
Burlap has a tendency to unravel rather quickly so the first thing we want to do is seam finish the edges of the burlap hearts. This is what the burlap looks like if you do not do a zig-zag seam finish on the edges. Can you imagine how much it would fray within a couple of days id this is what happened right away?
To do a seam finish, sew a zig-zag stitch around the outer edge of the heart as shown. You are actually stitching on the fabric and off the fabric using a wide zig-zag stitch.
Rustic Burlap Valentine Heart – Step 3
Once the zig-zag seam finishing is done if need be, press the burlap hearts nice and flat on a very low iron setting. Center and pin the red felt heart on the pretty side of one burlap heart. Stitch around the red felt heart using the pressure foot as your guide.
Rustic Burlap Valentine Heart – Step 4
Then place the two burlap hearts together pretty sides out. Pin in place. If you are using these as bowl fillers do not add the jute as a hanger. If you are making the burlap heart into a hanging heart, add a jute hanger as long you want it and pin in place as shown.
Rustic Burlap Valentine Heart – Step 5
Now stitch around the outer edge of the heart using the pressure foot as your guide. Don’t stitch at the bottom part and leave that open so we can have an area to stuff the heart.
Rustic Burlap Valentine Heart – Step 6
When you get almost to where you started stop sewing. Leave the heart inside the machine with the needle down and gently stuff a little bit of craft stuffing into the heart. You do not need a lot of stuffing. Keep in mind burlap stretches out of place very easily so do not over stuff the burlap heart.
Rustic Burlap Valentine Heart – Step 7
Last, finish stitching up the burlap heart.
Have fun hanging your burlap hearts or placing them as bowl fillers for some sweet Valentine’s day decorations for your home!
