I’m so excited to share my favorite go to cookie recipe that I make from the time the weather gets cooler and up until after Christmas! My friend Sarah gave me this recipe, which has been passed down four generations in her family. She has baked these with her daughter and now her grand-daughters. Now that is 6 generations of these yummy cookies being made in her family.
These Old-Fashioned Molasses Sugar Cookies are great during the cool fall months and into winter time. Just after baking them, try a warm cookie with hot-chocolate or coffee! Yummy…
Speaking of passing down things to younger generations, my great-grandmother made this quilt back in the 1930s from her family’s worn out articles of clothing. What a wonderful cherished handmade gift I have from her!

YOU HAVE GOT TO TRY THESE DELICIOUS MOLASSES SUGAR COOKIES! HERE ARE THE INGREDIENTS YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THEM:
3/4 cup of shortening |
1 cup of sugar |
1/4 cup Brer Rabbit Molasses (mild flavor with the gold label) |
1 egg |
2 tsp. baking soda |
2 cup sifted all-purpose flour |
1/2 tsp. cloves |
1/2 tsp. ginger |
1 tsp. cinnamon |
1/2 tsp. salt |
Old-fashioned Molasses Sugar Cookies – Step 1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. The first thing you are going to do is melt shortening in a saucepan over low heat. Then remove it from heat and let cool. Next add sugar, molasses and egg to bowl; beat well. After that sift together dry ingredients; add to first mixture. You are then going to mix the two together well and chill.
When you cover the bowl and put it in the refrigerator the cooled dough makes it a lot easier to roll and the dough won’t stick to your hands. So in-between baking the cookies, I always put the bowl back in the fridge, even if it’s only for 5 minutes!
Old-fashioned Molasses Sugar Cookies – Step 2
Now you are going to form 1 inch balls out of the dough. After that you are going to roll those babies in lots and lots of sugar! After all they are called “Old-Fashioned Molasses SUGAR Cookies!”
Old-fashioned Molasses Sugar Cookies – Step 3
Then place the dough balls about 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet.
Old-fashioned Molasses Sugar Cookies – Step 4
Finally bake the cookies at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
Your cookies are now ready to be eaten up. Don’t they look delicious!
Old-fashioned Molasses Sugar Cookies – Added Tip!
I will let you in on a little secret,… I ALWAYS double the recipe, and put 1/2 of the cookie dough in a plastic bag and freeze it. That way when my family is ready for more, I can just grab some out of the freezer, let it defrost and bake some more cookies.
And that’s it, simple and delicious! It’s the perfect fall time dessert for guests, parties, to go on your Thanksgiving dessert buffet, or… just because!
