It is bittersweet to say goodbye to two of our top sewing students who are graduating this year and heading in different directions. Both Molly and Sarah share their love of sewing and design, and each has been sewing here at the studio for several years as students and then became instructors. The two of them have been a big part of our Thursday night late class for the past five years. They’ve now finished High School, and they will begin a new journey in their life as adults. Sarah is heading to California and Molly to Florida.

Sarah began sewing here at the studio when she was eight years old in a “Mommy & Me” workshop. She loved it so much that as soon as the 6-week workshop was finished, she began weekly classes in our school-year program. Sarah went from sewing and making crafts to making her collections for our annual fashion shows. She always shows her creative talents through her collections. Sarah has participated in 9 of our fashion shows, holding many awards in both her everyday collections and costume competition categories. Some of her collections include, “British Invasion,” “Jailhouse,” “Audrey Hepburn,” and “Versailles.” She also designed and made both her junior prom gown and her senior prom gown. Sarah is continuing with her love of fashion and design as she heads to California to attend The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles.

Molly began sewing at the studio when she was 12 years old eager to learn how to make Disney costumes. Molly is all about Disney in every possible way one can be. She is a real die-hard Disney fan and hopes to work there someday. Molly is headed to University of Central Florida Rosen College of hospitality in hopes to start her career for Disney after graduation. Molly has made many Disney costumes and crafts while sewing at the studio. Her latest indeed are both of Rey’s outfits from Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. She placed 2nd with the judges and 3rd with viewers choice award at her second fashion show with her “The Dark Side of Disney” looks, where she made the costumes from Disney’s Haunted Mansion Ride and the Tower of Terror. Molly is part of “The Rebel Legion” which is an international fan-based volunteer organization dedicated to the construction and wearing of screen-accurate Star Wars Rebel Alliance costumes. They dress up in costume and do charity work like fundraisers, hospital events, and community events to bring smiles to people’s faces.

We wish both of these girls the best of everything in all they do. They will be hugely missed here at the studio. Enjoy the photos of the girls throughout the years here at the studio (please read left to right for most comprehensive and cohesive timeline).

Sarah was modeling her “British Invasion” Jacket for her second everyday line at Love to Sew. Her technique and prowess as a young designer was truly a talent! Photo circa 2013

Molly evolved as a seasoned costume designer, and she got more advanced in her looks. Here’s her Persona 5‘s Haru Okumura costume in the “Anime” Competition, circa 2017

Sarah became the Studio’s resident gown designer as she created beautiful silhouettes and rich garments as she grew, as shown in her “Audrey Hepburn” line with this chic Breakfast at Tiffany‘s look, circa 2015, Sarah not shown.

Although impressive, Molly’s previous costumes didn’t stand a chance next to her original Rey costume from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The amount of detail and excellent accuracy of her outfit is what got her accepted into the “The Rebel Legion” group! Photo circa 2017

Here’s another photo of Molly walking with her The Force Awakens Rey costume in Love to Sew’s most recent fashion show: “Designers of the Galaxy”! The details, such as her armbands and pants, are shown in more detail here. Photo circa 2017

At the same time, Sarah was creating her prom dress for Junior Prom. Always the master of gowns, Sarah used gorgeous techniques to bring an air of old Hollywood glamour to a timeless gold dress. Photo circa 2017, Sarah pictured with her date Jason

Sarah also used this dress most recently as a part of her “Versailles” collection, which played in beautifully with gold fabric and extended cut. She truly knows her aesthetic, which will be a significant aspect of her time at The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in LA. Photo circa 2017, Sarah not shown.

However, as the fashion show ended and our seniors came into their final year at Love to Sew, they had a big decision to make: what would their final project, a staple of the senior year in the studio, be? As their time in the studio was growing smaller, Sarah and Molly choose their projects, which precisely reflected their aesthetics and desires for the future. Where would those projects bring them?
For Molly, the destination was always Disney. Ever since a young age, she had been immersed in the wondrous and whimsical world that Walt had created almost 50 years ago, and it was always her dream to make people as happy as he did. So, inspired by her love for both Disney and Star Wars, she created Rey’s secondary costume from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Photo circa 2018

Just as “The Rebel Legion” does, Molly puts smiles on everyone’s faces as Rey. Her positive attitude and dedication to being the best Rey she can be, both with costume details and personality, truly shines through with children. She is a perfect fit for Disney hospitality. Here’s a photo of her at Lancaster’s Zenkaikon as Rey with a young girl, who is awestruck. Photo circa 2018

Sarah’s love for design, elegant fabrics, and skilled sewing techniques drove her to chose fashion as a career. Her ideas of glamour and sophistication were advanced from a young age, and as she grew, this only matured, as shown in her final project, her Senior Prom dress. The silver fabric and draping look as if she is a professional designer. The fashion will be grateful to have her as she matures further. Photo circa 2018

As shown in the prom dress, Sarah can wow and impress with the simplest of silhouettes with her fabric choice and layering of the silver sparkles over the matte fabric. Through challenges with lining and the technicality of a low back, she learned and executed an impressive number of difficult skills, showing her readiness for the fashion world. Love to Sew Studio wishes the best to both Sarah and Molly as they embark on their new journey at College. Know that although you may not be students anymore, you will always be family at the Studio and you are forever welcome here. Good luck and shine bright!
